Holy Mole
Sometimes, just sometimes, we crave Mexican food and finding it in Sydney is a somewhat daunting proposition. This is part of the reason why we were so happy to find Azteca's in Randwick.
There is however an awful lot more to like about Azteca's. To start with it's a family run business and you are immediately, openly, welcomed to the family. The "charm" of the decor* only adds to the approachable feel (somehow the words ambience and atmospere don't quite work in this sentence). Legend also has it that Jose Cruz (one part of the afforementioned family) is also a mariachi, although we haven't had the pleasure of witnessing this ourselves.
The food is authentic, comforting and filling from the many moles** through enchiladas to the sizzling fajitas.
BYO, dig in and enjoy.
Azteca's is at 140 Avoca Street in Randwick.
* we do find ourselves wishing we could swap some of the old Mexico postcards for photos of Lucha Libre and that we could get them to constantly run Mucha Lucha on the TV on the back wall.
** witness the carnage we inflicted on moles of chorizo, con quesa and bean
before >>> and <<< not long after
(sorry in advance if this posts x3 - forms do that for me when I post at work - not sure why)
Azteca's is great! - have the flan for dessert. I've heard Jose sing (and play guitar)brought tears to my eyes. He's got so much heart.
Coming to Sydney from Texas, I was on the hunt for good Mexican food. Azteca's is authentic, but I'm sometimes not thrilled with the food (as can be the case with true "authentic" foods - I hear Chinese food in China lacks in flavour what it makes up for in oil).
Cafe Pacifico off Reiley St. in Darlinghurst(?) is good also, very different feel to Azteca's.
There's a mex place in the Spot that's OK - they cater to the movie crowd at the Ritz.
I heard recently that there's good mex to be found on Victoria Rd near Gladesville. I've yet to test that myself.
If you ever got to Austin, TX - be sure to eat at Las Manitas on Congress Ave. They only do breakfast and lunch. They are my touchstone of great Mexican food. I've never had better - in Mexico, Australia, Texas or the US (sic).
But what I'm really here to recommend is the cheese gnocci at Pazzo on Crown in Surry Hills

We like Pazzo too, we had an excellent meal there. Alio (just across Clevland St) however is our fav Italian in that part of Surry Hills.
I've also heard that Cafe Pacifico is quite good, we'll have to make a point of getting there soon.
